USS Monitor (1862)
A Union ironclad was created by Swedish-American engineer, John
Ericsson, despite the fact the he was mad at the United States
government. Commissioned the USS Monitor, on February 25, 1862,
the 172-feet long and 42-feet wide ironclad soon departed for
Hampton Roads, Virginia to counter the CSS Merrimack. On march 9,
1862, the four and a half hour battle between the CSS Merrimack
and the USS Monitor ended in a draw, however, the moment the two
ships opened fire that March morning every other navy on Earth
became obsolete.
