What: FLATitive is a flattening agent for use with water-base
acrylic paints, like Badger Air-Brush Co.’s increasingly popular
MINITAIRE, MODEL/FREAKflex, and Woods & Water paint brands. This
additive, FLATitive, when added to a gloss acrylic paint, reduces
the paint’s gloss level, from its original gloss to semi-gloss,
matte, or flat. FLATitive allows the artist to adjust a gloss
acrylic paint to whatever finish they would prefer.

Why: All acrylic paints start as a gloss. Certain colors, when
manufactured, have their gloss level reduced to a more commonly
preferred finish for those particular colors. Others do not.
Often times this results in an artist coming upon a color they
would like to use, but it not having the finish characteristic
they’d prefer for the piece they’re working on. Rather than
tediously trying to apply a dull coat over just the specific area
of the un-desired gloss finish, as many artists must currently
do, FLATitive enables the artist to reduce the paint’s floss
level prior to the paint’s application. Pretty cool, huh? And
definitely faster and easier than the dull coat process.
